American artist Thomas Hart Benton was born on April 15, 1889. He and his wife, Rita spent nearly every summer on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in southern Massachusetts, from 1920 until the artist’s death in 1975. This earned them the hard-won designation as “islanders.” The couple’s children, especially son, T. P. Benton, developed a lifelong interest sailing and even built the sloop shown in this lithograph, entitled "Repairing the Sloop." He sailed the sloop to Florida where he lived for a time and in 1973, brought it back to Martha's Vineyard for repairs. This print shows the younger Benton working to replace the sloop’s damaged stripping, the ladder nearby suggests his comprehensive repairs.

In her artwork, contemporary painter and printmaker Prilla Smith Brackett explores images and ideas of home. This painting is part of a series entitled "Old House," which Brackett created as she prepared to move from her old family home, a summerhouse acquired in 1916 and enjoyed by many generations of her family.

Fabergé Easter Eggs?!? Throughout history, the egg has been a powerful symbol of rebirth and new life, especially during the spring, when nature awakens from the long sleep of winter. Perhaps one of the most charming, early 1900 Easter traditions was the collecting of egg pendant necklaces. From her first birthday, a girl would be given a small egg pendant every year before Easter, to be placed on a small chain, a precursor of the present day charm bracelet. These egg-shaped charms made by Fabergé offer a playful nod to the legendary Imperial Fabergé eggs.

April Showers ☔bring May flowers.. 🌷🌸🌷but did you know they bring crows as well? This watercolor painting by American artist, Charles Burchfield seems like a simple composition, but it includes calligraphic patterns inspired by Burchfield’s study of Chinese scrolls. The grayish-purple sky creates the successful illusion of a rainy day. Music influenced the artist's aesthetic. He frequently sketched abstract symbols he “saw” when listening to classical songs. Thought to have synesthesia, a neurological condition that results in a “crossing of the senses,” Burchfield heard music while simultaneously seeing swirls or patterns of color that he integrated into his works, earning him the designation of one of America’s most original watercolorists.

By the light of the silvery moon... the moon is nearly full, a great time to explore nocturnal themes. This moonlit scene created by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, shows an elongated cross-shaped shadow on the floor created by the full moon shining through the window. The mysterious seated figure gazing outside, is a friend of the artist. Munch's best-known composition, The Scream, is an example of his many explorations of love, fear, death and melancholia.

Women's History Month is a great time to celebrate artists in the collection. "Bird Head Hammer," created by New England metalsmith Sue Aygarn-Kowalski, is both stunning and functional. The artist strives to live actively, physically, and tactilely in an increasingly computerized world, and offers her work as a counterpoint to digital culture.
